Purifying our hearts

In Arabic, the heart is called Qalb, which comes from a root word meaning 'to turn' or 'to change.' It is in a constant state of flux, and our goal is to ground it in faith.

Why the heart?

The heart is the primary receiver of Divine Revelation. The Quran mentions the heart over 140 times, describing its various states and its central role in our lives. Allah ﷻ reveals that the Qur'an was sent down specifically upon the heart of the Prophet ﷺ.

Surah ash-Shu'ara (26:193-195) "The Trustworthy Spirit has brought it down upon your heart [Prophet], so that you could bring warning in a clear Arabic tongue."

This teaches us that the heart, more than the ears or the eyes, is the true vessel for guidance.

Diseases of the heart

Diseases of the heart are "locks" that prevent us from receiving guidance and engaging in tadabbur (contemplation of the Quran).

Surah Muhammad (47:24) "Do they not then reflect upon the Qur'an, or are there locks upon their hearts?"

One of the most destructive diseases of the heart is hasad (envy).

Surah an-Nisa 4:54 "Do they envy [other] people for the bounty God has granted them? We gave the descendants of Abraham the Scripture and wisdom- and We gave them a great kingdom."

  • Hating to see others receive blessings or guidance.
  • Concealing the goodness of others.
  • Engaging in backbiting or putting others down.

Purification process

How do we heal our hearts so they are ready to receive the Quran?

  1. brightness_7

    Establish peace (salam)

The Prophet ﷺ taught that spreading the greeting of Salaam and practicing mutual love are keys to faith and entering Paradise.

  2. brightness_7

    Count your blessings

Focus on the unique gifts Allah has given you. Each one of us has unique gifts and talents that Allah intended for us to use and contribute to the world. When you focus on what Allah has given you, you’re less likely to look at others with envy.

  3. brightness_7

    Show forbearance and forgiveness

Show mercy to those who may envy you, as commanded in Surah al-Baqarah (2:109). Pray for the person you feel jealous of. Make Dua for their success to break the power of the Nafs (ego).

Common questions

Your assignment!

Reflect upon these questions (perhaps after your prayers). Be prepared to share your reflections during our live session.

  • What is the current state of my heart?

Is it turning back to Allah (Munib), is it at peace (Mutma'in), or is it struggling? What is one "lock" I can work on opening this week?

  • What have I allowed my senses to take in?

How does what I hear and see (social media, news, conversations) impact the health of my heart?

  • How have these influences affected my relationship with the Quran?

How do I want the Quran to "know" me? What is the aspirational state I want my heart to reach?
